| ||Bette considers visual art to be her third language, having begun with classical singing as a child, then moving on to professional writing as an adult. At the age of 30, she began studying and working in graphic design and illustration.
With a Master's degree in Publishing and a Diploma in Graphic Design, Bette has spent over 25 years teaching and working in the publishing field. She developed two-year programs in Publishing and Public Relations, the first of their kind in Canada, and later a Learning Development Centre for a college, comprising curriculum development and publishing, customized training, and faculty development.
She began painting full time in early 2003, and has enjoyed taking courses and working with major local artists and art groups. Her paintings have been shown in galleries and public exhibits.

| ||Each painting is an adventure in both technique, and the exploration of the self. I work in acrylic, watercolour, and oils. The subject speaks to me and dictates the medium. I have used a computer since before desktop publishing, and it is another tool with which to create contemporary works.
Water is a common theme, for I have an affinity for coastal edges, working on the river, and living and playing on the lakes and oceans. I enjoy working with people, animals and urban landscapes from Europe and North America.
Although the elements differ greatly, I have found that design principles apply both throughout the arts, and throughout society. I explored this theme in various cultures in my work toward my Master’s degree, and continue it now through my painting.
